I was going to going to use Telegram for that very same purpose and stopped at the same point. They wanted to charge the Premium service just to get the OTP, and I had visions of never being able to cancel said service...or paying the amount and the OTP never coming through ( lots of reports of that on the interweb ).

How did you circumvent that ?

In my case, it would have to be the housesitter signing up - I wasn't going to link my credit card on her phone. :ROFL:

I tried everything I could find online, various telegram apps (Telegram X, etc) - none worked. I also tried an older APK also didn't work, I tried on/off wifi, vpn, etc. Nothing worked.

I eventually linked it to her gmail account during the setup and suddenly the normal SMS OTP came through. No idea if its related or a fluke.
 
Anyone here using Home Assistant to help with controlling TV screen time..?

Thinking of a smart plug that can push power draw to HA and based on power draw spike, kickoff a timer that will switch off the smart plug after whatever value specified..

Depending on your router, you can also monitor uptime via the LAN/WiFi connection. Some TVs (I have tested with LG AND Google TV) have integrations to directly monitor and control the TV.

If the TV is connected to eg a Google TV box or a sound bar using CEC, then switching that device off will also switch the TV off.
 
Anyone using a POE doorbell? (besides Reolink - they seem to have moisture issues)

I wanted to go POE for my new one, but the decent ones are just too pricey.. 6k for the Hikvision unit I wanted and then you need to buy the security bracket for the outdoor unit separately too..

Decided to go with the EZVIZ HP5 at less than half the price of POE.. being a 4 wire unit, you get a power supply for the indoor unit so that's a bit of a faf vs POE, but I am happy with the unit..

I saw the EZVIZ HP5, my problem is getting the right power to the unit - I released I have a PoE switch about 2m away from where the doorbell could go, so its just a case of drilling a hole through the backwall.

My POE Reolink is still fine, had it for almost 3 years. Mine is completely exposed on the outside, no awning or anything.

I did have a weird issue for a few months where it would become unsreponsive every now and then for some reason and I would have to reboot it. I thought it was a goner but then one day it just stopped doing that and has worked perfectly fine for like a year now 🤞

In short, describe your automation ( via voice ) to an almighty AI and it then does the heavy lifting for you i.e. creates the complex automation by scanning your HA environment, finding the entities / devices you've described, and setting it all up for you.

In the last week, two of my Tuya smart sockets (opposite sides of the house and different circuits) have just decided to Bork themselves somehow. They are on stock firmware and I manage them via the official Tuya Integration.

They keep on losing WiFi / or something, but worse, power in front of the plug , EG the TV or whatever connected to it , also flaps . The period of flapping is random from 2 minutes to 25 minutes

First one was the the tuya socket o my desk, which has the NAS amongst other things connected to it for power monitoring.

I am not at home, so I don't know how many times my NAS had to recover the raid in the last week.

Then the other one , is the one for the TV cabinet, which started doing the same thing in the last few days.

Had to get the SO to do support using b

1. Unplugged the tuya socket to proper power down the smart switch. Issue persists

2. Second put the tuya socket on another plug socket, with no load. Issue persists.

3. Reboot all the APs (uptime 5 months). After reboot. Desk socket, seemed stable for 2 hours and then the **** started again .

4. The TV cabinet socket continues to flap.

What's odd: entire house is surge protected. Have Ellie's plugs connected to the plug sockets before the Tuya sockets are connected (yeah I was super paranoid - in the load shedding days and before inverter was installed)

Other tuya sockets of the same kind and purchased around the same time continue to be stable .

Anyone experience the same? Have these just magically borked themselves so I am forced to buy more ?
 
Made a simple and quiet circulation fan for our ensuite.

Because of the shape of the room ( tapered roof ), it suffers ceiling mould in the winter months. I really, REALLY dislike those noisy, off the shelf extractor fans. So I needed to make a plan.

This setup moves the moist air toward an open window on the opposite side of the bathroom where nature takes over and sucks it out. Only been running it for a few days now, and the difference is quite something.

It's controlled by HA using a simple timer on a smart plug/outlet from Smartpad. I was going to go all ESP32 on it with humidity sensor and such. But the cabling required just wasn't going to receive WAF. So this was the compromise. As is, the cable is glued on top of an existing alarm sensor cable. So this is as good as it was going to get !
