So if I don't add salt in my softener for 2 months then my pipes would be fine?

Yeah. I've had hard water (>270 mg/l of CaCO3) since the house was built 5 years ago and not run into any pipe problems yet Lots of scaling of showerheads, taps, shower screens etc but it takes many years for the pipes to get blocked. Also, once you start running soft water again it slowly starts dissolving the scale.

I was always pretty adamant that Pretoria's tap water was clean enough to drink.

Fast forward to a chat with a mate of mine who works as a contractor on municipal water infrastructure. He told me that at every reservoir he's worked on, the metal manhole covers had been stolen, leaving the reservoirs exposed to the elements.

He also shared a few stories that changed my perspective—finding dead birds in reservoirs and even seeing homeless people leaving a reservoir after going for a swim.

Needless to say, that conversation made me rethink my confidence in tap water. I've since switched to using the local water filling stations instead.

No panic, no conspiracy—just a reminder that sometimes it's worth hearing from the people who work on the infrastructure every day.

I had a bad experience with them in East London. Even the ones here in PE suck. There is a Tops near me on the way from work.
