Starlink launches in Côte d'Ivoire before South Africa

Amazon is still figuring out how to build ground stations and terminals en-masse. This is tricky as it involves certification and there are regulatory hurdles. I'm also willing to bet there are some lessons to be learnt when deploying the service/devices at scale. With the amount of money they are shoveling toward this project, there is no doubt that they will make a success out of it.

Amazon need SpaceX to launch their satellites. That should tell you everything you need to know.
To be completely fair, both companies are in dire need of heavy lift capability. Blue Origin and SpaceX are extremely close to achieving that with their latest generation rockets. Blue Origin skipped the medium lift (falcon 9) category and went straight to heavy lift, which is pretty impressive.

I highly doubt Amazon will be able to charge significantly more for their service, considering its still in the teething stage. The cool thing about Amazon is they have a significant infrastructure advantage with regards to AWS.

I'm willing to bet that most people/companies that require LEO satellite service will most likely end up having both terminals. This offers amazing redundancy (and bandwidth).

all the people with internet crying for more internet, at what, 4 - 6 times the price of lte/ fibre

shame man

Musk must take his Starlink and shove it
I agree with you. The fibre in the camp sites in the Kruger National Park is so good I wonder why people would want Starlink there. /S

Shame man. Why you go to KNP for fibre?

You should go take selfies with lions.

I shared my Starlinks (Gen 3) bandwidth with 2 ou toppies and some teen girls at KNP when I was there recently. Some hi-capacity powerbanks was all it took. They were very appreciative and impressed.

The internet there is very sketchy at times even for basic use. One girl even plugged her own long RJ45 into the router too - smart one that was. Pity she used it just to upload TikTok and Instagram videos of her and the animals. They made themselves at home in the bakkie.

The animals were more appealing than her tbh. Pretty soon more women came over to upload stuff and send messages, using the WiFi which I left Open.

The launch in the Ivory Coast means that Starlink Internet is officially available in half the African countries recognised as sovereign states by the United Nations.

According to Starlink’s coverage availability map, it plans to roll out in another 18 UN-recognised African countries, as well as Western Sahara, before the end of 2026.
C'est magnifique

Anyone here unhappy about corporate abusers Vodacom and MTN actually getting some real competition?

what did you expect - the cant tw@ttys running this government want to steal shares of the company made to sell Starlink here - Musk is not stupid enough to let utter nonsense like that happen so he will always tell them to stand on their heads and whistle through their ar5e - so Starlink will never happen in the way that the SA government want it to happen because Musk will forever tell them to fark off

Any of you actually need Starlink?
A lot of people and businesses need Starlink. Internet isn't the only service they will offer. They will be launching cellphone networks from space as soon as their latest rocket starts flying.

So you'll be able to get signal anywhere in the country (and the world, for that matter) as long as your phone has a clear view of the sky.

Our networks need a good kick up the pooper. Our data offerings are a joke.

Not my question. Of course there are many rural areas that will benefit.

I’m asking if any of you need it?

Starlink needs every customer they can get or they will go bankrupt. So follow the law or piss off.
