First Huawei 5G smartphone in South Africa for 5 years achieves 300Mbps speeds on Vodacom and MTN in places with weak signal

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max achieved download speeds exceeding 300Mbps on Vodacom and MTN over 5G signals characterised as "weak" by the MyBroadband Speed Test app.

We tested the capabilities of Huawei's first 5G smartphone outside its home market of China following the company's regional launch event in Dubai on 16 July 2026.

There is no sense in Starlink as much of SA is covered by an excellent 5G network. I was watching the World Cup Final last night at a location which still made use of satellite TV and the signal kept cutting out or provided a blurry picture.

Many of us just took out our phones or tablets and watched the game via 4G or 5G. Why on earth would you want to return to outdated 1960's technology? Musk fanboys only like Starlink as they dream of living on Mars and are still obsessed with the "Space Age" like man children.

Hence I would rather have this spiffy phone which only requires a weak signal to beat Starlink's best speeds as it would be much cheaper in the long run. A weak signal is not hard to find even in die Vrystaat.
