ESP launches South Africa's "live status page"

EskomSePush (ESP) has launched an online dashboard that tracks electricity, water, and Internet disruptions across South Africa.

ESP co-founder Dan Southwood-Wells announced the new dashboard on LinkedIn on Monday, 12 July 2026, calling it a "live status page" for South Africa.

I wonder how accurate it is and where they are pulling the data from?

People post on their app that they have no electricity and then it does a push notification to others in the area "Someone has no power in x, is your power on?" etc. Everything from gunshots to dogs roaming around to people seen jumping a wall.

I wonder if they also observe official Twitter or Facebook accounts of the municipalities? I recall that City of Cape Town had a power alerts account that would post about locations where water or electricity was currently down, or scheduled to be taken offline.

They've added more "direct" reporting. E.g. If I open the app it directly asks if I have issues in the area, and then I can drill down into "Power/Water/Internet" and then directly indicate if I have power or not.

Relying on user text would be very inaccurate I think.

Not very - our power has been out since Saturday. They "repaired" it yesterday but a phase went out and we're only getting 106v at the moment.
