I'm on a 1000/500 line with Cool Ideas with MetroFibre being the FNO. I have the line because I WFH often, and do a lot of CFD simulations etc. which often leads to large data transfers. I'm not a downloader of any kind, streaming & work.

For the last month, I've really struggled with basic streaming in the evenings. The pattern is remarkably consistent - from around 5pm to 10pm, my line crawls at downloads lower than 20 Mbps.

I've had to do several tests - MTR, direct connections to the ONT, etc. etc. etc. The results are fine outside this window. I've stayed up evenings to test, got up early morning to test.

All the MTR tests reveal issues the moment I hop out of my network, losses 9-15% on each hop during that time window; less than 1% in the early morning / outside the window.

MetroFibre techs have tested the line (physically) and changed out the patch cable etc. No issues seem to be present, but I've gotten almost zero technical details.

I wrote a script to ping cloudflare & google, do a speedtest and MTR - speed test and ping is hourly. The results of the last month is below - a few gaps here and there when I kind of gave up and stopped the scripts.

I don't expect to reach full speed (I don't need it 90% of the time), but I can't keep paying for this if it crawls at night.

Feels like old school throttling, but I'm being assured by Cool Ideas its not the case.

I've plotted the results below. I'm unsure on what to do now. Do I drop to a lower speed? Is my connection being "managed" because its on a larger line? Should I just drop speed? Should I switch ISP?

@PBCool - being helped by a team member, but I'm not convinced its enough.

Hi there, thank you for reaching out. Apologies for the delays in resolution here.
I see your ticket has been re-opened with our escallations team, who will take it further with MFN again.
I have allocated a Static IP to your connection (due to the multiple disconnects i noticed on the line. This is temporary for monitoring purposes), and have also noticed you don't have ICMP enabled.

I would like to gather some latency and packet loss data in the meantime, to aid the investigation further, but would require you to enable ICMP as well. The existing data provided thus far is also quite concerning, and will definitely be useful as well, thank you for this.

Typically this is not an issue with your fibre line itself, but instead a capacity issue at the OLT or with the backhaul links .
We will do our best to get to the bottom of the issue accordingly.

Question,: Are you also aware of any of your neighbours experiencing a similar issue with peak time degraded service?

(I noticed your line utilization is quite low right now, thus i have I dropped your connection at 00:36 to connect you on the static in the meantime)

Good morning,

Many thanks.

I can ask my neighbour to check.

On my Deco, I'll disable "ignore ping from wan", which I assume is what you need for ICMP in this case? I'm upgrading network gear this week, so if we get this all sorted, all the better.

Thanks again for the help.

Thank you kindly.

ICMP is also working now :)

Thanks. I spoke with my neighbour - he has similar issues: buffering, slow speeds after about 5pm. He will do a few speedtests tonight. He is on a 200/200 line.

Appreciate the extra effort to get this confirmation, will definitely help us push forward with MFN.

We will let you know of any further updates once received.

It's called "Netflix Hours"
This is what happens when your ISP or FNO or both are saving up for the CEO's new Porsche

Hi there @umbra. MFN has advised the issue has been resolved, this was about 2 mins ago
We have asked for a little more clarity on what they have found/changed etc.

But lets see how things go this evening :)
