The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies said that 239 spaza shops across South Africa now offered state-backed public Wi-Fi hotspots.

He also admitted that the department does not know which of the spaza shops offering connectivity are legally registered. The hotspots were part of a project to expand nationwide free public Internet access.
