Only 17% of hopeful learner drivers passed the new test in the Western Cape

I would to see how the people pointing finger who did theirs under the old system fair now. I've heard many people who got their license in the past say they wouldn't be able to now. Simply put our road rules system has been described as too convoluted.
 
They also give zero feedback so there is no way of knowing what answers were wrong. This is in my view even worse for those that do pass but with wrong answers. They also have no idea what they have no idea about.
 
Learners was very easy - all you needed was the K53 guide back then.
I paid for over 50 lessons before I went for my Drivers, to be sure I knew 100% what I was doing.

Now you can just pay to pass a learners and drivers - as a package!

How is this a problem? For *whom* is this a problem, exactly?

This.

When we have bad drivers on the road it's not just a case of wasted time or minor bumps - these do happen all the time for many reasons. The really bad drivers are the ones who are far more likely to cause serious accidents and deaths.

Especially heavy duty vehicles.
 
Driving around SA you soon realize the rules are the road mostly just suggestions, not actual rules.
Lawless society norms.

Stop in the middle of a bridge to pick up a passenger? No problem.
Stop both lanes to swap passengers? No problem.
Traffic light red? No problem, no one is moving so go ahead.
Use turn lane to drive straight on, skipping straight on queue, because queues are for chumps. No problem.

Did my EB a few months ago on the new system, no issues, the K53 handbook and a few old test questions is enough, the rest you can actually use common sense.

In fact, there were about 10 of us, and more than half passed that day in my slot, so it can't be that bad :)
 
How times have changed.

Did my first leaners in SWA, Windhoek, in 1988. You just showed up at the traffic center across the road from the power station, filled in some papers and sat down. Then a guy called you into a office and the test was done oral, so I failed, all the stuff I got wrong he told me what the correct answer was. So I went and bough a book and did some studying, and went back, only to find that he asked the exact question as the first time.

Told all my friends that they only have one test and what the answers are. Two friends went the next day and passed the first time round.

Did my bike learners a few years back and sailed through it, passed first time.

I did my learner's and driver's licenses on the old, manual system back in 2004 - and passed first time on both. Unfortunately, I was part of that first group who didn't automatically get an EB or EC license - which meant for the past 20-odd years I have been towing my trailers around illegally, and it recently became an issue with the insurance, so I had to redo my learners so I could upgrade my license to EC

I did the new, computerised test in Stellenbosch, without any previous studying, and passed with 100% first time around. Nothing complicated about it.

I think all this shows us is just how corrupt the licensing system had become. The change in pass rates on this new "cheat proof" system, just proves how many people were buying their licenses previously.

Interesting? Where did you do yours? Mine in 2004 was most definatly still 100% manual.
 
Ok I give up, what new system and when was it introduced,... If it is the computerised system used in the rest of the country for the last 3 or 4 years plus, then it isn't a problem with the test but rather a 'between chair and screen' issue. If it's a new test someone dreamt up in the last year of so, then I have no idea.

Doing a mock test is actually a good suggestion. It allows the less tech savvy to understand the system. If you fail after that, you have to study harder. No more brown envelope options.
