Reserve Bank keeps interest rates unchanged

Caused a bit of chaos on the trading floor yesterday. Everyone assumed interest rates would rise so positions were adjusted accordingly and then with the announcement it triggered a fairly big selloff. The rand has been fairly range bound for ages in the 16.20 to 16.50 range and yesterday it jumped to 16.80. A bit of petrol price pain incoming.

I'm guessing the 30$ added to a barrel of oil will have a bigger impact 😢

And then more inflation behind it.

Same! Crazy how quickly the IRS/FX/Bond markets had to adjust post MPC. Wasn't fun but sure saw some price-games afterwards!!

EDIT: wanted to add something interesting that I picked up regarding the SARB commentary - first time they took a proper dig at the incompetent municipalities causing a lag on growth. Wonder if the SARB is changing their tactic from pure CPI focus via policy rates to being slightly more political in their approach?

Missed that. A very interesting move. I think it is wise on their parts. Starting to publicly lay the blame for the growth problem on where it really lies as the ANC has been pointing fingers at them blaming them for lagging growth. Delicate balance though. Don't want to be too at odds with the powers that be.
