Only 17% of hopeful learner drivers passed the new test in the Western Cape

Doing a mock test is actually a good suggestion. It allows the less tech savvy to understand the system. If you fail after that, you have to study harder. No more brown envelope options.
There are ALWAYS brown envelope options. This will force more to make use of it.

I think this way....if someone only gets a licence on a fourth attempt for example, the fault ratio is 3 to 1. What if such person maintains that record through life, make 3 errors for every 1 done right? A very dangerous driver then imho.

My fault ratio was 0 to 1....got all on first attempt, right first time, both car and bike licences incl learners'.

Maybe a person must succeed once for every time he failed, so if someone fails 3 times, he must pass the test 3 times before a licence is issued. ???

You get I think 3 practice questions to familiarise yourself with the system. That should be more than sufficient.

Especially if you consider that it is presented in your first language/language of choice - and it’s a very straight forward multiple choice questionnaire - one really doesn’t need to be “tech savvy” to pass. You need to be able to read, and have the absolute bare minimum of hand eye coordination and motor skills. If you don’t have those, you probably aren’t capable of operating a motor vehicle safely anyway

Our biggest problem is not knowing or not knowing the laws, making mistakes or not making mistakes. It's a total lack of policing. People do as they want with zero repercussions.

If this is a 'computerised' test, they should be able to generate a random paper (say 30 questions out of a pool of 300) and make a practice test available online. The point should be to educate prospective drivers, not to fail them.

A yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark isn't a common sign and honestly shouldn't be what people are tested on.
Let's do car controls, stop signs and robots, barrier lines and speed.

No. The entire purpose of a test is to fail people who do not understand the subject at hand.

The drivers or learners license test is not about educating. It is about enforcing a minimum standard of preparedness.

Driving around SA you soon realize the rules are the road mostly just suggestions, not actual rules.
Lawless society norms.

Stop in the middle of a bridge to pick up a passenger? No problem.
Stop both lanes to swap passengers? No problem.
Traffic light red? No problem, no one is moving so go ahead.
Use turn lane to drive straight on, skipping straight on queue, because queues are for chumps. No problem.

You forgot those driving the wrong direction on one-way roads, as it this was normal

How new is this system though? I did my learners on a digital platform in the 2000s. How is it different from what's in the K53?
You did the same k53, it's been the k53 for almost 30 years

Yep K53 was pretty easy. And shame - the way some professions speak about 'speed cops' as in this is a speed cop diagnosis "central crushing chest pain, elevated ST segments and high trops" - so called speed cop heart attack diagnosis - call the cath lab.

I did my learner's and driver's licenses on the old, manual system back in 2004 - and passed first time on both. Unfortunately, I was part of that first group who didn't automatically get an EB or EC license - which meant for the past 20-odd years I have been towing my trailers around illegally, and it recently became an issue with the insurance, so I had to redo my learners so I could upgrade my license to EC

I did the new, computerised test in Stellenbosch, without any previous studying, and passed with 100% first time around. Nothing complicated about it.

I think all this shows us is just how corrupt the licensing system had become. The change in pass rates on this new "cheat proof" system, just proves how many people were buying their licenses previously.

Interesting? Where did you do yours? Mine in 2004 was most definatly still 100% manual.
I did mine 1999, didn't automatically get EB, EC, wife did hers ten years later same thing. What are you talking about automatic eb/ec??

The old Code 8 was converted to EB as far as I remember.

As others have said. The change happened in 1998.

Everyone who did their license up to that point, was automatically reissued with an EB or EC (depending on whether they had a code 8 or code 10).

The rest of us got automatically issued with B or C licenses, and no one ever explained or took notice of the implications this had on towing. Which meant we just went about our business, towing double axle trailers around. Not even the traffic cops knew (or if they did, they didn’t care). Then out of the blue a few years ago, they woke up to this, started issuing fines etc for towing illegally - and soon after insurance companies jumped on the band wagon as well - which is now forcing a lot of 30 and 40 somethings to redo their licenses. Big pain in the backside. I spent years trying to work around the system - but eventually gave in this year, and just redid the thing. The computerised learners license was a breeze. The practical test also a non event.

What’s annoying is my geriatric grandmother, who has never towed so much a a venter trailer, is legally allowed to tow 3 ton Ski Boat - but me, even though I have a “truck” license, was not even allowed to tow my caravan - because of the stupid licensing system. If they had actually made things make sense 30 years ago, most of us would automatically have opted to do the EB or EC from the get go.

17% indicates a serious problem with the testing and training, NOT the students doing the test, that much is obvious.

Would love to know what bellends are running or setting the exam questions <-- they're the problem.
