First city in South Africa to launch electric buses

The City of Cape Town revealed on Thursday the first of its all-electric MyCiTi fleet, a 12-metre Volvo BZRLE battery-electric bus nicknamed "Evie."

In total, the city is expected to roll out 38 electric buses, which will be charged by a solar photovoltaic system at a large MyCiTi depot.

A bit slow to the party there... The other larger bus operator in CT, Golden Arrow has already got BYD electric buses in their fleet.
Yes and no.. MyCiti would have rolled out BYD electric buses in 2018/19 already, if there wasn't irregularities around the whole deal.. Golden Arrow launched theirs in 2021..

and are we paying more for licences because of these busses.

No pics of the solar panels at the depo? Do they charge the busses at night?

Awesome, very well done! Do these busses go to Clifton Beach, Sea Point, Newlands and DHL Stadium? I'm planning on visiting Cape Town soon. I hated the putrid stench of diesel busses and now electric busses have eliminated that.

Please explain why this would increase your license fees.
no problem let me explain

"
Transport minister Barbara Creecy said her department was considering an additional fee which would be charged when motorists renew their vehicle licence discs.

The new fee would be implemented to support the Road Accident Fund (RAF) as electric vehicle (EV) adoption grows in South Africa.

EV drivers in South Africa currently don’t contribute to the RAF as its revenue was generated by a levy charged on every litre of fuel sold at service stations in the country.

As EV adoption increased, fuel sales and funding available to the RAF from the levy were expected to decline."
