No new disc games on PlayStation from January 2028

I was a huge Sony fanboy. Not anymore, in fact if they continue down this path I will boycott them.

I don't have any problem if people want to own digital only consoles and games, and that IS available to you right now.

I do find it odd that some people have their heads firmly up Sony's billion dollar butt in wanting physical discs dead.

If there is a market for them, and there clearly is, then let physical games continue. Sony just wants more money and control.

And I don't think they realise just how pissed off this decision by Sony has made fanboys like me and just ordinary gamers alike.

I believe PS5 sales are down 20% and I see this trend continuing and worsening into PS6 sales.

Digital and physical can live side by side.

This is a kind of straw man. I didn't say digital was dying, all I told you was to not predict the demise of physical media. I'll add to that as the physical media for PSN is the only media which is available via alternative sources.

Your spotify example. You also get Amazon music, Youtube music, Apple Music, Tidal and others.

To play games on PSN, soon you will only be able to go to their online store only.

With physical there was an alternative source. Often at a lower price. There are many alternative sources of music.

I do understand. But I don't want you to be supportive of Sony's BS PR where they lump all digital sales including DLC and digital only games vs physical, to make this seem inevitable. It's not. Even with 10% physical sales, Sony could go on. They just don't want to because this kills the second hand market and increases profits.

If physical games are expensive, why does Amazon, Best Buy etc have regular sales of their games at lower than PS prices? They''re not. And sorry but Fsck Sony.

You angrily waltzed in here 20 pages late when most of your points have already been discussed or debunked.

Firstly, you'll be able to buy your digital games at retailers, not just PSN. Like I can buy GTA6 on Amazon. They literally mentioned it twice in the blog post. This doesn't replace the benefits of physical and won't be as cheap, but it flattens many regulatory hurdles.

Secondly, the DLC thing has been debunked multiple times now, for the love of god. It's on their financial statements which is available to anyone who can read, it's FULL GAME SALES ONLY. Here: https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/25q4_supplement.pdf

And why shouldn't it include digital only games? You realise that strengthens their argument?

Lastly, I support physical, I still buy it like I told you last time, which you seemingly ignored. I would prefer it to stay. That doesn't mean I'm gonna foam at the mouth and have my brain rotted by misinformation. So I'll ask you again, how many PS5 discs have you bought?

You seemed to have missed prod's question where he asked you how many PS5 disc's you have bought?

PlayStation fans are making their voices heard.

Following Sony's announcement that it plans to end the production of physical discs for all new first-party PlayStation games starting in January 2028, some members of the community are organizing a week-long "PS5 Blackout" this August. The movement encourages players to avoid playing on PS5 during the protest period as a way of expressing frustration over the industry's continued shift toward an all-digital future.

For many gamers, physical games are about more than collecting. They offer ownership, resale value, game preservation, and the ability to play without relying entirely on digital storefronts. Supporters of the protest argue that removing physical releases limits consumer choice, while others believe the transition to digital distribution is inevitable as technology evolves.

Whether the blackout gains significant momentum remains to be seen, but the discussion has once again highlighted the growing divide between players who embrace digital convenience and those who want physical media to remain an option.

Maybe an Xbox fan throwing a bit of mud as well, what with that "f*** Sony" closing comment. :)

I don't have a bone in this saga but I highly doubt Sony ever planned on releasing the PS6 with an optical disk drive.
