Vodacom and MTN launch legal action against new mobile data expiry rules in South Africa

Vodacom and MTN have launched legal challenges to new regulations by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), which deal with the mobile bundle rollover and expiry.

"Vodacom has asked the courts to review certain parts of ICASA's End-User and Subscriber Service Charter Amendment Regulations," a spokesperson for the operator told MyBroadband.

Time to issue some new licenses. Start with provincial licensing for anyone who can produce a guarantee of funding for x billion needed for infrastructure. Allow provincial entrants to roam on each others networks. This duopoly needs to end.

The public comment details for that might be useful - my suggestion is that there should only be two types of bundles:

• Uncapped, time limited (with speed limits allowed)
• Volume based, with no time limits

(And this should apply to all bundles - SMS, call minutes, special data (e.g. streaming), normal data, etc...

Meanwhile the rest of the world has moved on or is moving on to simplified models where it's a fixed cost for mostly uncapped service with only premium 5G subject to cap/fair use falling back to best effort 4G.
