The hidden data centre in an upmarket Cape Town suburb where house prices average R3 million

Teraco's CT-1 data centre in Cape Town stands out in South Africa for its unassuming exterior, which looks about as interesting on the outside as a small town accountancy firm's offices.

Located at the Great Westerford building at 240 Main Road in the upmarket residential suburb of Rondebosch, CT-1's property is a far cry from the typical modern data centre that powers the Internet.

This is actually pretty cool.
I have the opinion that architects lost the bit of culture, creativity and ingenuity that architects of the olden days had.

Everything these days are bland or looks out right stupid.

Is R3m really considered upmarket in Cape Town? Alternatively phrased question, is Rondabosch that cheap now?

Most of the places I've been looking at, which I do not consider upmarket houses or in upmarket areas, start at like R3m. R5m is where things start becoming slightly more upmarket...

R3mil is a modest house in Obs.

Prices average 3mil because there are so many flats there. A house in that area will be way more than 5 mil.

Did I just read the same article? Saw not mention of R3mil?

at least it looks better than the teraco monstrosity in JHB, Isando road, thats practically Teraco version of manhattan at this point in time, keeps getting bigger and bigger.

consider the vallie in me impressed, seeing what the facility in JHB looks like.

the cape town people at least make it look unassuming and boring, drove past it the other day and wondered what it actually is, thought it was a university campus, or the offices for some shadow goverment or something evil hiding in plain sight.

“Average” is the keyword there.

Interesting fact, the Great Westerford was on fire 11 years ago.

I was there…nice way to get a day off. 🤣

But on topic even working there you’d never know there’s a data centre underneath.

Unlike this AWS one in Brackenfell you can hear humming away if you just cruise past.
