The issue of bribery is much talked about, especially when the DA loses a MONC but I don't ever recall any proven cases.

Most coalitions fall apart because the biggest party in the coalition is greedy and doesn't accept it did not get a majority, you are then stuck with parties that are hungry enough to stay in, but always looking for an opportunity to stab you in the back.

They were at my 'hood as well a few weeks ago, including outside the gym, lol. Definitely trying to get enormous turnout in their strongholds, although I think they might be surprised by a modicum of opposition to the rates' debacle.
 
Does campaigning really work? If it does to what extent? Do people really don't know who they will be voting for and at the last minute some party comes in and convince them?

I am asking because I permanently have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice, unless something exceptionally catastrophic happens to all the three choices, I am not going to be listening to pitches from different political parties at election time.

i think campaigning has a purpose where a party (and i speak now of the da and my ward) senses a potential erosion of voter base, and other parties can make their pitch in order to encourage fence-sitters to jump ship

It's more about registration of voters. Majority of the population won't vote in this municipal election (I think it was 46% turnout in 2021 - ok it was under strange conditions (Covid) but we only had a turnout of 58% in the far more important national/provincial elections in 2024). Now that I think about it, saw them at the shopping centre and outside a local café as well. I must say I've never seen such activity from the DA in my ward. Usually you'd not know an election is occurring besides the posters.

I think it is mostly useful for new parties, and even then not at the eve of an election.

For more established parties I doubt it makes any meaningful difference to what you were going to get before you campaign. It might also work to reassure your voters who are unhappy, for example the DA Afrikaans voters who are always threatening to vote for the Freedom Front.

I do get that, even on that it seems the turnover from registered to voter is proving a massive task, more and more people are registering but the voters list is shrinking.

No second car salesman would ever knock at your door to bother you, campaigners have a much more difficult task, if you had to make a comparison, they would be more comparable to evangelists who are spreading the word hoping to convince prospective believers that their religion is better.
