Just picking it up is enough for it to explode in your face, no sugar required so its impossible for a barista to pour 110c water into a coffee cup.

No, with coffee particles suspended in the water, this will not happen. The coffee granules act as nucleation centres, preventing the water from superheating.

With the Mcdonalds coffee the machine was superheating the water under pressure.

They wanted to give the customer a hot cup of coffee so they made it brew at 100+ which is insane.
the assumption was that it would cool down in time... but the cups were also very well insulated so it was keeping a very high temp.

Brewing over 90 deg is grounds for public caneing.

The ones they use at the McDonalds are these BUNN machines:

That thing doesn't have sufficient pressure to push even a small fart through underpants, nor can it superheat the coffee

I know many of us exist in a kind of Mandela effect where we hear a story once and it exists in our brain as fact thereafter.
Its becoming less and less of a thing because of the internet and google.

I remember having the same opinion about the McDonalds coffee case - for some reason it was brought up in school as a example of why suing corporations was out of control in the US and needed to be reigned in. If you think about it its an awfully convenient talking point if you are a corporation endangering public safety and you would like to reduce the costs of future lawsuits.

It almost like a big part of growing up is realising how of the opinions you were told to believe really are based on unquestioning stupidity.

and yet is does, it also has a heating plate at the bottom so its cooking the fresh coffee at the same time.
 
We should have flying cars, AI is about to take over the world, but instead we`ll get warnings in our fast food packaging that's it's as warm as it's supposed do be. , that and warning labels on incandescent packages not to eat it. Half of the humans are below average IQ.... think about that.

The big corporation was exactly the reason people thought that, they are the ones who pushed that line of thinking.

Maybe Ronald's boots taste super yummy but I'll rather go with Megacorp being fined 0.0001% of EBITA for selling coffee so hot it required years of agonising reconstructive surgery to remedy.

Seriously, nostalgia for a past that never existed is one hell of drug

Or milk for that matter.

Superheated water happens under very specific conditions, so whilst it is interesting, tt certainly isn't what is going on with a McHummunds coffee.
