Small South African fishing village turning sea water into drinking water using solar power

The small coastal town of Witsand, located at the mouth of the Breede River in the Western Cape's Overberg region, is home to Africa's first solar-powered desalination plant.

The nearly 200-year-old town's name is Afrikaans for "white sand," referring to the large white dunes that characterise its coastline.

Much easier to install and maintain the infrastructure in the river estuary than in the sea. There is probably a slightly higher risk of fowling the intakes with debris during floods in the river, but there are ocean waves, pristine beaches to cross etc. etc.
