Good news for people with specific driver’s licences in South Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa's cabinet has approved extending South Africa's driving licence validity period from 5 to 10 years.

This was confirmed by the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who said the changes would only apply to specific driving licence codes and vehicle types.

“Cabinet approved the extension of the validity period of driving licences for Codes A, A1, B, and EB from five years to 10 years.”

She said the 10-year renewal period would apply only to light motor vehicles, while heavy commercial and public transport vehicles would remain subject to the existing 2- or 5-year renewal periods.

Now let's see them actually do it..

LOL, I just renewed mine last week. I'm not expecting much...

Edit: The article says nothing about age and eyesight, which I thought was their whole point. I am 64, and in 10 years things will not be the same...

President approving any and everything before the impeachment.
Good luck to the next president

So just get your eyes checked...

Fairly sure it will only be "good news" once your license card has a date printed that is 10 years in the future.
As part of the legislation changes, they will probably say licences from XYZ date will be valid for 10 years from their date of issue.

If you're not able to drive, the responsibility not to drive is yours.

a Minister and team went to a few countries to learn how they do it. Okay they also discuss the car license thing.

After confirming that her department was working to extend the validity period, Creecy warned in January 2026 that the extension could increase driving licence application and renewal fees

Sure, that makes complete sense. You are now having to do 1/2 the work, so you need to charge 2x as much.
