Opinion - you have to cross a large desert - which vehicle to use ?

Easy - Toyota Landcruiser.

They carried a ramshackle third world army to victory across a desert.

The Toyota War was fought primarily in the Borkou‑Ennedi‑Tibesti Prefecture of northern Chad, along the Chad–Libya border. This area is one of the most arid and sparsely populated regions in Africa, characterised by desert plains, sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and seasonal wadis

Just use a new gen 4 Jimny or if it was at all possible, a brand new 2001 Jeep XJ Country 4.0 Auto.

Landcruiser or Hilux based 'technical'. Can't be too careful with all the insurgents around. Most seem to have been exported to Europe though.

Nah, the road is already smooth enough.

VW Phaeton D2 W12...

Definitely understood the assignment, considering fuel is not an issue. At least you won't get too hot in the desert, as per Dr Piëch's initial design brief for the Phaeton.

If range is a problem, either the 3.0 TDI Phaeton, or the Audi A8 D5 3.0 TDI - pretty reliable diesel with a bulletproof ZF 8HP.
