Not my car, belongs to BIL.. It is a 1.4 Comfortline, 128k on the clock and drives it like it's a race car on Killarney..

It was due for a service, but shortly before it went in, he drove it with too little coolant, overheating and blowing the head gasket..

Just got the report back from the mechanics and quote to sort out the head gasket, along with major service and all the rest of the many many issues..

R 82k all in..

In the Western Cape, seems the going rate for similar cars is around 140-170k.. Car is still financed, with may be two years left (unsure if there's a balloon or not)..

Anyway, what would you do in this situation..?

Per my post, it's not just the head gasket, there's a laundry list of other things too..

Major service, various suspension bits and pieces, brakes front and rear, heater matrix/radiator and and and..
 
I've just spent R30k on a 2014 Golf 7. They put a "clutch kit" in and replaced front shocks. New VW battery.

It was a difficult decision because the car's only insured for R200 000k but now that it's fixed I'm super happy.

If your friend doesn't go for it, what car will he buy?

Are all of those items actually needed though? It seems a bit unusual for so many things to needed at once, unless it was never really maintained.

BIL did sweet blue f'all to maintain the vehicle.. too many speakers, a sub that can be heard a mile away and mag wheels with stretched tyres were far more important than saving for maintenance.. then he also allowed himself to get trapped by a useless woman, getting her knocked up and now has to provide for a toddler too..

It’s not economical to repair that car at R82k. But because it’s still financed, maybe he should get a second and third opinion / quote.
 
Take the car to be looked at somewhere else
 
2nd/3rd quotes *might* *maybe* come in cheaper on the labour cost, but that might only end up being about 8-10k saved, which is a saving but doesn't really make it any more economical..

Parts wise the quote is on par with aftermarket prices from Midas and the like..
 
Gasket, new stretch bolts, sealants and engineering to skim the head... might be cheaper to just swap the engine. If the heater matrix is also an issue, then that could be a dash out job, so plenty shop hours there.

Sounds like a lot of stellar choices. Maybe suggest a helmet and find a tree/cliff to get in the way... may the odds be forever in their favour.

Thats way too high, what engine is it the 1.4 Tsi?

* Burnt wires from over-zealous sound installations
* Cracks in most of the glass from the doef doef played at full volume
* Brandy and coke stains on the upholstery, empty Ricky Louw bottles broken into the seat tracks making it hard to adjust the seat
* A dent in the floor from the accelerator pedal being pushed hard to the floor
* Smoked clutch, clicking CV joints from all the wheelspinning
* MIL light on because ECU has detected numerous instances of over-revving.
 
The entire 1.4 engine he can get for R25K + R10K labour and another R6K for a major service. Clutch is probably shot if he thinks he's Verstappen, so another R6K all in with labour brand new. Where the hell does the other R35K come from? I spend half of every day dealing with dealerships and auto workshops and these are fair prices. Either the brother in law or the mechanic need a p-klap Not sure who.

Again, as I had noted three times previously, it's not just the head gasket and major service, there is a long list of other things too..
