Surprising information about 100 solar power systems on Checkers owner's stores

Shoprite Group chief sustainability officer Sanjeev Raghubir has revealed the grocery giant does not own any of the more than 100 rooftop solar power systems installed at its stores and distribution centres.

Instead, the systems are owned, built, operated, and maintained by renewable energy providers, and Shoprite buys electricity from them through power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Surprising information about 100 solar power systems on Checkers owner’s stores: They can't keep the shop from smelling like dodgy meat and veg.

It doesn't feel like a lot of solar considering Checkers/Shoprite scale. Or am I smoking my socks.

I imagined a child smiling after learning something new reading the topic title.

I can already imagine another smile after learning they don't own own all their stores either.

'tis what a 30% pass rate gets you I guess.

Yup, opex vs capex basically...
Aaarrggghhh. People saying "it is opex" as if that is always the right thing. Especially in cloud people will smile "opex" as if it is a universal advantange.

No. Opex vs Capex depends on the business, their cost of capital, their IRR, their spending priorities etc etc. I always cringe when technologist walk into a financial services institution like a bank or insurer and tout "move to the cloud because it is opex" in front of actuaries and accountants.

There is no magic "opex" is better than "capex".

In fact technologist should never say it.

No, I'm not saying its the "right thing" but in broad strokes it would be a driver in this choice for Shoprite.

If anything, in my opinion, Opex is usually not the right thing when it comes to core business requirements but it does help in the short term reporting game.

In number of installations?

I mean ultimately you are space limited for any given installation and I’m sure in many locations where they don’t own the buildings there’s are contractual issues.
