2.7 GWh virtual power plant planned in South Africa

Owners of Deye products in South Africa will soon be able to earn recurring passive income by enrolling their batteries into a virtual power plant (VPP) managed by Plentify.

Chinese inverter and battery manufacturer Deye has appointed Plentify to create a 2.7 gigawatt-hour (GWh) VPP in South Africa.

Wont everyone be expected to now get that bidirectional meter? And be part of the 1000 rand plus fixed fees club? And register?

I wonder if the "virtual power plant" won't be feeding back into the grid, but rather offset own usage against battery and not the grid.

No, that is not what a VPP is. Virtual Power Plant is exactly that, a power plant, like our OCGTs and pumped storage. You are a power plant that will be used to balance the grid by feeding in or taking load and get paid for it.

Yup, I read that. But given the bi-directional meter issue, it isn't quite that straightforward.

Yes, will need a compatible meter. It would be in the utility' best interest to install it for free as the benefits outweigh the costs.

It should be seeing that it costs the utility R7+/kWh to run a diesel peaker. Who knows what other charges there are seeing that eskom charge R500/kW for demand charges. There is money to me made here folks.

Call me skeptical, but considering most municipalities don't even pay R1/kWh for feed-in, even during high-demand time, I doubt the VPP will pay much to the end-user.

The laws have to change and are changing. I say another 3 years for them to catch up. They will have to get with the program if our future is decentralised power generation.

"Virtual" means something that is made or done using a computer, something that acts like the real thing in effect, or something that is very close to being true.

Maybe we will first have to wait and see if it actuallly exists before getting excited. Plans are plenty, action is non existant.

Sorry but what are we doing here?

If the council pays higher for elect when in high demand, your Deye inverter will rather use your own battery and not pull from the grid?

For now its just a proof on concept for our backwards government to say look see, we have a network of 160000 batteries you can tap into.

They are just brokering the sale of your surplus.

COCT already lets you sell your power back to the grid, this is just more of the same... probably at a better rate (where meter and grid supports it)

Cape Town is not VPP yet where the network is dynamic and operated in real time.
