New online system for smart IDs in South Africa

Home Affairs has launched a new online platform that allows people to locate their nearest participating bank branch for smart ID applications.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, introduced the system on 3 August 2026 during the Home Affairs Digital Partnership media event with FNB at Canal Walk in Cape Town.

Also, Home Affairs on their roadmap said that by 2029 they hope to have biometric passports for South Africans.
This is after Zimbabwe, Lesotho and most of the countries in the world have it.
