Spam callers face penalties of up to R1,000,000 in South Africa

Direct marketers face administrative penalties of up to R1,000,000 or 10% of their annual turnover, whichever is greater, for violating new rules about spam in South Africa.

Trade Minister Parks Tau has published amendments to the Consumer Protection Act Regulations, strengthening mechanisms for blocking direct marketing in the country.

So you need to opt out of something you never opted into by giving all your details for this database. And then every month these spammers get access to this database to clean out their database.

Did the spammers come up with this process?

a mandatory opt-out registry that empowers consumers to proactively block unwanted marketing communications.

Direct marketers are required to “cleanse” their databases monthly against the National Consumer Commission (NCC) registry to remove consumers who have opted out.

Except true caller blocks legitimate numbers like the police and hospitals as well.
They also harvest your contacts.

So you’re a bit stupid to use them.
 
Hasnt stop the Property agents from calling me 5x a day or the debt consultants (even though I have zero debt) calling 12x a day from 087 numbers.

and it only started 3 months ago, and I didnt sign up for anything.

Yup the ****ing Real Estate people drive me insane.

If it’s not a call then it’s a WhatsApp or worse still **** in my mailbox…which is why I no longer have one.

They also have this bizarre thing of rocking up on your birthday to give you a “gift” which is usually their shitty calendar and a Lindt ball.

Get them as well, if the agent is lucky I just put the phone down. If I am in a bad mood, they get all kind of expletives thrown at them

You are special then, all I get is a good morning wave. But they have moved from next door to me,and i get on well with the agents. At least i am immune to the JW, they will not canvas the block, because an apostate lived here, so it is forever blacklisted. I only rarely get those calls, helps that my adopted sister is an agent, and she put a do not call on my name.

No, now I'll use them even harder.

And your post is basically bull$h!t because emergency numbers are toll free and sim independent.

And SAPS NEVER phones anybody, and hospitals only phone you when they are looking for money.
 
Does the new opt out website work? Last time it timed out. And before that they wanted you to upload your ID, also asking question like marital status, if you are dead or alive and other irrelevant questions that marketers would love to access.

I signed up on the old opt-out website, and had the same negative experience as some other forumites also reported. Some of the people who send the spam SMSs also send the legitimate SMSs, e.g. bank notifications. Having signed up for opt-out meant that I was also removed from the contact list for the legitimate messages, which caused problems. Maybe they were training people to not sign up.
