They're feeling it thanks to shipping costs. If your order has 2k kits of RAM, that's an additional 2k very small items to split the shipping costs.
Picture this (hypothetical numbers):
- A 20HQ/half a 40HQ container can fit 400 Corsair cases and costs R 130k of which R 50k is sea cargo (you'll see why I mentioned this later), each case has to cover R 325
- Remove 2 cases and add 280 Corsair fans - you now have 678 items that each have to cover R 191.74
- Remove 15 more cases, and add 2,000 kits of Corsair RAM - you now have 2,663 items that each have to cover R 48.82
The more items you can fit in the container, the lower the shipping cost per item, and RAM/SSDs are one of the smallest items.
Of course, the split isn't strictly per item (although some distis do this), but rather by CBM, or volumetric size. It's easy to allocate R 48.82 to a R 3,000 case or set of RAM, it isn't as easy to allocate R 48.82 to a R 50 fan without making the price laughable. As such, high value items can absorb much of the shipping cost - those same high value items that are in short supply right now.
What about eg Antec that doesn't sell RAM?
Well, the market has shrunk to the point it's no longer viable to bring in such large quantities, so the cost price per item has increased as the pricing tier has changed. Again hypothetical numbers if Tier A is for ordering $ 100k at a time and offers 10% lower pricing than MOQ, Tier B is 7% less for ordering $ 75k at a time, and Tier C the base price for ordering MOQ (maybe $ 10k), you could be paying 10% more as you're not meeting the requirements for discount.
Some vendors also offer FOB (free on board) if you order a certain amount, meaning that logistics in the East/Europe from a warehouse to the ship (that side only) has no cost to you. Others offer shared freight if you order a certain amount, meaning your total cargo costs could even be halved.
By ordering less, you could be losing out on as much as FOB, half the cargo costs, AND volume discounts.
