Actually, it would've been wiser for DSTV to do this, unbundled would end up costing people more. Especially when it comes to sport, the entertainment side would cost far less for people, but those who want sport would be paying the R500 to R800 a month for sport.

I think that is where they are getting it wrong also. Unbundle and make it cheaper like say DSTV Access as you bas package and add sport channels for R250 or so per channel and then still offer premium for R979.

That way you catch the whole market. People that watch everything will but premium and people that only want to watch certain sports will add those to their bundle.

It generates them extra revenue and people are happier they pay less. I don't think there will ever be a time where people are happy with prices.

How could they add a sports package for R250, when you've just shown two that are higher and have less sports showing? One was a streaming package only and the other was a limited service as well.
So how can DSTV in any way do it for less than those? Cut sports, sure that could do something, limit to live viewing with some highlights?

I think it's because people are getting nervous that these Frenchies with all their cost-cutting plans and dstv's struggles in SA will start to show less sport for SA viewers, but so far it's actually only been the Winter Olympics that were dropped.

Can't see them dropping Springbok rugby anytime soon (or ever) though.

Yeah, that would be a stupid thing to do honestly. Though if they unbundle they might have some packages with high end rugby games and such.

Has there ever been a Springbok game that Multichoice hasn't broadcast ? (since 94 at least)

More like - lucky for them they did get the rights because there would be mass cancelation if they didn't

Or just knew what does bring in revenue and what doesn't.
 
When it comes to Sports packages, I think its sometimes unfair to compare the pricing of the services like Stan, Sky, Peacock, etc. with Dstv. Remember, an American/European/Aussie earns in Dollars/Euro/Pound. So its relatively cheap for them to have a few services. We earn in Rands and so you can't really make a like for like comparison due to the exchange rate. That fact that dstv basically have an all or nothing package policy does not help the matter. I do however generally feel that we are ripped off here in SA and that comes down to no competition, especially with Rugby broadcasting rights. Were it not for the bad buffering I have experienced, I would have happily stayed with Stan and Peacock for my rugby fix.

Maybe. We'll only really know in 2030 with the next Winter Olympics if it was a once-off.

Except DSTV pay for the rights in dollars, pounds, euros or whatever. It's not they get a 3rd country discount.
