ICASA using tracking tools to crack down on SIM boxes used for spam calls

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has said it uses sophisticated systems to locate SIM boxes used to disguise spam calls in the country illegally.

A SIM box, or SIM bank, is a piece of hardware that holds multiple SIM cards at once and routes Internet voice calls and text messages to regular mobile networks.

They are not very successful. Unless what we have could have been worse. Getting 10 robot calls in one day is normal these days. Most of them show a Durban code.

They not very clever. If they mentioned specialty coffee or wanting to sell me coffee I would probably agree.

Luckily, I am not in the habit of answering calls from unknown numbers unless I have already received an SMS or WhatsApp message from the number explaining who they are and why they are trying to contact me. The other thing is that since I stopped using TrueCaller and started using Samsungs call blocker, I very seldom get any spam calls anyway.
