The remains of 56 people have been found improperly stored and decomposing at a Chicago funeral home.

Residents started noticing a "stench" coming from the South Chicago Chapel funeral home months ago, leading some to complain to the city.


State and local officials notified the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office that bodies were being stored improperly at the funeral home, with investigators and forensic pathologists dispatched on Thursday.

The remains were in various states of decomposition, officials said.

"Staff is assessing the conditions of the remains, searching for documentation regarding identification of the decedents as well as death certificates. This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition," the medical examiner's office said in a statement.

It added that families would be notified following the identification of the remains.

Chicago Police said detectives are investigating, but no arrests have been announced yet.

Illinois state officials suspended the licence of funeral director Johanna Morgan on Wednesday, alleging that bodies were being kept in an unrefrigerated area in "deplorable conditions including rodent infestation, causing decomposition and maggot infestation of the bodies".

Ms Morgan incorporated South Chicago Chapel Inc in 2022 and her husband, Clark Morgan, is listed as the funeral home's president, according to state business records.

Mr Morgan's funeral licence was revoked in 2024 for practising with an expired licence and unspecified "unprofessional conduct", the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation said.

The owners of a Far South Side funeral home where dozens of decomposing bodies were found earlier this week have run into trouble with state regulators before over their handling of bodies at a crematory in the south suburbs.

CBS News Chicago obtained photos from inside a trailer at the crematory where bodies were being stored. The trailer is located on the property belonging to Heights, and the photos show deceased people partially wrapped in sheets or clear plastic bags, with their faces and body parts sticking out.

CBS News Chicago also found bodies in bags moved from another trailer on the site, and there are questions about storage areas without proper refrigeration at the business.

One man had been dead an entire year.

Lot's of money in the mortuary business. A LOT...

Especially when you start stockpiling bodies and then cremating in bulk.

These people did it on industrial scale...when inspectors arrived at a facility, the boiling fat were streaming out on the place into the sewer.
 
Unfortunately, there is a majority of poorer black people in this area and they are taken advantage of when it comes to funerald

Perhaps you don't understand my question. Let me phrase it differently. If Sampie and Hettie Koekemoer run a business badly in a predominantly Afrikaner neighbourhood, do we point fingers at the residents or business owners and relevant authorities?

Would it be fair to blame Swanie from across the road simply because he's the same ethnicity as the business owners?
