What is driving the current “anti alcohol” rhetoric online

It's a crap drug. I had to go through months with withdrawal and vomiting. Just sip a lite cider once or twice a year now at work. Plus with the ANC sin tax it's just too expensive anyway.

I will hear you out on beer, but Whiskey can become extremely pretentious actually - hell, even beer can when you start getting into craft brewing and so on.

But not really store what your point is, this thread is discussing a very real shift in society - not sure how this is judging other people’s life choices. At an individual level it’s all good and well to make whatever choice you want about what you drink or don’t - but when a massive cohort of societies behaviour is changing at an unprecedented rate - and when this has a very real impact on the very social fibre of society (alcohol production and consumption has been central to human culture for pretty much as long as we have recorded history).

It is getting expensive, but I don’t think that’s it.

Good booze has always been expensive - that’s nothing new - and all forms of entertainment have become expensive, but that doesn’t mean people have stopped them. Record attendance for movies for example has been widely reported here, and that’s damn expensive.

Beer, as used in your example, is also not particularly much more expensive than Coca Cola, or Energy drinks, or vape juice for that matter.

Designer weed consumptions has seemed to take off during this same period, and there ain’t nothing cheap, or healthy about that (at least in comparison to drinking).

Lots of very decent wine is still available at under R100.00 a bottle. Not exactly expensive.

Sorry you had to go through that.

But if you had to suffer through months of withdrawal, you obviously had a drinking problem - which is different to people making a lifestyle choice to not engage in responsible, social alcohol consumption. Thats two different things. Especially when “influencers” with no history of drug abuse, start touting abstinence as if it’s some sort of life hack or super virtuous thing.

Also, like I said in my previous post, I don’t think affordability plays such a big role here. Also, making it about a lifestyle choice/virtue thing is also different to simply not being able to afford it.

That reminds me... I need to go grab some biltong out of the dryer for my gaming session. Also I should order a coffee from the kitchen. lol.

At least tomorrow I'll be countering tonight's sitting and gaming with a gym session. xD

BRAH... I went to jool in Potch (I studied at the "vaal campus" in vuilbyl and we went through to the main campus for jool)... besides it being a moerse jol - there were some cool bands playing and we made some epic memories... the one stalletjie was selling "vyand". The old oom puts the shot down in front of you and a glass of water, "moenie braaf wees nie, vat n slukkie water na die shot anders kots jy".

"JA JA OOM"

EVERYONE was grabbing for the singular glass of water after the shot. HAHAHAHAHAHA
 
I do not think that alcohol sales are falling because people are choosing to opt out of it. Rather, I think that alcohol has gotten really expensive nowadays. In Canada, a glass of cheap wine can go for $15, while a good glass of wine sits at $20+.

Yeah social media influencers love shitting on alcohol. Nothing wrong with the substance, its more about how people use it.

I have seen so many irresponsible people who make poor decisions that do not drink or smoke, and also seen so many good and responsible people who make great decisions but enjoy a drink and/or smoke. Inverse is also true. It all depends.

This makes me think of the Chris Rock video on the solution to gun violence. Don't make the guns harder to get, just make each bullet cost $10 000.

Same for expensive alcohol, if it gets too expensive to over-indulge in for most people, then you've cured alcoholism right?

But this is a voluntary shift? People arent being forced to drink less, this isnt prohibition.

As much as i love beer, I can see the social ills that come with drinking too much.

Some people clearly cant drink responsibly so the idea that they just abstain isnt all that heretical.

As you said, alcohol has been consumed throughout human history, I very much doubt its going anywhere.
