At least 29 dead following 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia

Deaths reported: At least 29 people are dead after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday in western Colombia, according to a CNN count based on reports from local officials in the affected areas.

• Where it occurred: The epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the northwestern department of Chocó, about 280 kilometers (or about 173 miles) west of Bogotá. The tremor was felt strongly in the nation’s capital, with alarms sounding and people evacuating to the streets as a precaution.

Number killed jumps to over 40​

At least 47 people have been killed in the earthquake, according to the latest updates from the country, up from earlier reports that put the number at 22.

27 people have reportedly died in the Valle de Cauca department, where Cali, Colombia's third city, is located.

At least a further 87 people have been injured, he adds.
