How on earth to you complete 4 years of study and still can't teach?
That is the big question. Mostly I don’t think it’s about whether they can or can’t, but whether they want to.
The problem with teaching (whether you go Bed or PGCE router) is that there is an extremely low barrier to entry - they are already not getting the best young minds at intake. You can get into a teaching degree even if you wouldn’t qualify for pretty much any other bachelors degree.
On top of that, an inordinate amount of bursaries are available for teaching qualifications. I won’t be surprised if 50% of all NSFAS bursaries go towards teachers.
So the majority are academically weak candidates from the start, then the coursework is not particularly challenging, and then they use the degree to get a COSATU protected job they essentially cannot be fired from no matter how little effort they put in.
So you are telling us you believe teachers should start on R8k per month and earn on average up to R13k per month?
My gardiner with no matric earns more per hour.
lots of other people, with other 4 year degrees do. Why should teachers be a protected class? Especially considering it’s not exactly a difficult qualification to obtain?
By the time I finished my 4 year degree, lots of people I went to school with, that dropped out or didn’t get university exemption were earning a hell of a lot more than my first salary. But that quickly changes.
They could also teach twice as much by reading and speaking quicker. Like a YouTube video with that speed slider. Imagine starting school at 7 and finishing at 10am and having until 1 to finish homework. Dawie should be reading this thread.
You joke - but it is kind of possible, if they start splitting classes up again based on how smart the kids are. The A classes can then be allowed to work through the coursework a lot faster, freeing up time for other activities and endeavours.
One of the biggest mistakes they made in public schools in recent time is doing away with splitting classes based on performance. Now the actual smart kids have to be held back, and be taught by overwhelmed teachers battling to get concepts over into the heads of less smart kids who actually need extra attention.
