Climate change: World's hottest day since records began

More than two-thirds of England now in drought

Drought officials have declared 71.3% of England is now in drought, after the nation recorded its driest July since records began in 1836. Last month, England and Wales saw the driest July since records began in 1836 - while for southern England, it was the driest month ever recorded.

A total of 45 million people are now living in a drought area in England, with more than 27 million facing water use restrictions.
"We know the hot and dry weather is taking a real toll on farming and there will be long-lasting impacts on our environment," Grayling said in a statement, adding that "we need everyone's help in using a little less water to make sure our current water reserves last".

Farmers have reported reduced output after their earliest harvests in 20 years, with the National Farmers Union (NFU) warning that continued dry weather could lead to some food shortages.
NFU president Tom Bradshaw said yields of wheat and oats were "very, very poor" this year and warned livestock farmers have had to use their winter feed rations because they have been unable to grow grass.

Only 14% of England's rivers are considered to be at normal levels, while 22% are "exceptionally low"
What has been striking about this summer is not any single record, but the way weather extremes are piling up.
Climate change does not cause every heatwave or drought, but it does shift the odds.
By raising average temperatures, it makes extreme heat more likely and, when rain fails, increases evaporation and dries soils faster.
That creates a feedback - dry ground cools the air less, allowing temperatures to climb still higher.

The East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Kent and East Sussex, and Solent and the South Downs have moved into drought status.

And due to his global popularity the old git had an immeasurable effect on the average person's opinion on climate change and environmental conservation. I partly stopped watching him years ago because of this.... once I saw the old entertaining yet ignorant boomer side of him I couldn't unsee it so I moved on.

None of these f**ers will ever suffer any form of accountability for their reckless and ignorant opinions combined with their insane power over public opinion. Him going from car journalist to farmer then almost immediately running face-first into the worst drought in almost 200 years of recorded English drought history feels like it was written by an alien writing a cautionary tale movie.

He's always been a prick really, but an entertaining one in the realm of motoring. Any of his opinions outside of that were just the opinions of an old fart for me at least.

Still can't really fathom why people take the opinion of "famous people" any more seriously than that of jim fish on the side of the street for important topics that require deep understanding and education.

It's amazing how much better we'd be off if the phrase "I don't know" was elevated culturally to be the default state of any sane, trustworthy and influential person.

EDIT: What I find interesting about this is, I've noticed in the past few months when I watch Youtube videos, when someone in the video uses the "I don't know" phrasing, the comments are littered with people picking up on it and thanking them for doing that. It's almost as if a large part of society is hungry for change. Many people are getting gatvol of know-it-alls who end up being wrong about subjects they know f-all about.

Absolutely, and even to have people going "Its not an area I am well versed in, maybe find out from the experts" would go a long way.

I wish someone like Joe Rogan would understand this. Maybe don't ask people like Mel Gibson what he thinks the earth of the age is or if evolution is real.

Joe doesn't really care about the truth, he cares about the viewer numbers and sponsorships and all that and will peddle whatever twaddle gets him those figures.

I hated the term when it first started being bandied about, but we do 100% live in a Post Truth era where the actual truth is irrelevant.

I still find the guy funny. His whole schtick is the Boomer out of touch with modern times. His character is so out there I view it as satire, even if it's who he really is.

The whole joke of Top Gear back in day was that they were all irresponsible know-nothings.

I've always taken his opinion on anything that matters about as seriously as I take Monty Python skits.
