Situation Report

Created on Tuesday 11 August 2026

Source: PKB2

Area: North West Province – Bojanala – Rustenburg Platinum Belt – Nkaneng – Wonderkop

ESG Focus: Illegal Mining; Zama-Zama Activity; Fatalities; Community Safety; Mine Security

Situation
PKB2 has obtained further information directly from EMS Control regarding the fatal illegal-mining incident at Nkaneng near Wonderkop.

EMS Control confirmed that the incident involved an illegal Zama-Zama excavation.

According to the latest information:

14 persons have been confirmed P4 (deceased).

A further 17 persons were reportedly transported from the scene by private transport. Their condition and the hospitals to which they were taken have not yet been confirmed.

The illegal excavation is reportedly situated between Glencore mining property on one side and Bleskop Mine on the other. It is suspected that the illegal miners may have been excavating towards either of these mining areas. This remains a preliminary assessment and has not yet been confirmed.

Comments and Elucidation by Compiler
The confirmation of 14 fatalities and an additional 17 persons privately transported establishes this as a major illegal-mining incident in the Rustenburg Platinum Belt.

The location between Glencore and Bleskop is particularly important. Priority should be given to establishing the exact position and direction of the illegal workings and whether they intersect, approach or originate from infrastructure associated with either mine.

The reference to Glencore or Bleskop should at this stage be treated strictly as suspected direction of excavation and not evidence that either mining operation was responsible for, or connected to, the illegal workings.

STATUS: 14 FATALITIES CONFIRMED BY EMS CONTROL VIA PKB2 – INVESTIGATION CONTINUING
