We had a newly appointed person with a bachelors degree in science. On his first day, the laboratory manager asked him to prepare a standard of 5% isopropyl alcohol and 1% n-propyl alcohol in a balance of ethyl alcohol. The solution had to be in mass percentage and be a 100ml standard.
After preparing the standard, he had to analyse it on various gas chromatographs to see if the instruments are still analysing correctly. He had to do 5 repeat analyses on each instrument.
By the end of the day the laboratory manager asked him to show his analyses results. The scientist told him that he hasn't done the analyses yet, he will only be able to do it the next day, he is still busy with the calculations as to how much of each he has to add to the ethyl alcohol to get to the requested percentages of each.
Those calculations should not have taken more than a minute or two to do...
