Good day, fellow old people. Looking into historical PlayStation prices and was hoping someone might recall the launch price of the PS1 in SA in 1996.

Roughly that price in 1998 as well, went to Northgate with a friend who bought one.I remember quite clearly, since it came bundled with Resident Evil - R2499. I bought mine from Dion - most older people will remember this store.
That was a lot of cash for 1999 too. Prob around R11 000 in todays money.

Inflation indicates that is the equivalent of 12k now.Closest I could fine from an old NAG edition from 1998: https://www.nag.co.za/wp-content/archives/1998/011NAG DECEMBER 1998.pdf
This was for a combo.

Well the console itself was around 2k in 1998, so 5 games, extra controller, memory card + the sundries adding up to another grand, not to bad considering the controller was about 200 bucks by itself, the memory card was also about 200 bucks. That is quite high, in today's money that's like 13k and at that point the console was 4 years old already, although looks like it only released in SA in '96.
Maybe not too bad for a bundle with 5 games but definitely not as cheap as people make it out to be.

I remember the PS2 when I got it in 2003 was about 2k as well, the Xbox 360 was 4k for the Pro model in 2006 on Launch here. Gaming was a bit cheaper when the Rand and dollar were better
Close enough ;-) didn't always come with the 2 free games
