As with most things in SA the UNIONS are only there to make a fortune for themselves.

Unions getting too strong is very bad for a country. Unions being non-existent is very bad for worker safety and basic rights. You need a balance. I support unions in their work to make workplaces safer, as well as ensuring reasonable reasons for being dismissed. On the other hand once a union is too strong you get SADTU, the most evil organization in SA. Support teachers who never teach and make them un-firable.

Yes, it's this terrible tendency that distinguishes them from organisations world wide.
If only they could be more like FIFA.

The Cosatu Peace Prize has a nice ring, actually.

And America? Everywhere they are the same

They barely exist in the US, which is why an employer can fire you on the spot for something trivial. Which is also a reason why unions do have value when they operate in a rational manner, employees can be protected from arbitrary dismissal and/or discriminatory and exploitative practices.

Unions like NUMSA have a place in society, but not ones like COSATU, they act more like a political party than a trade union, they should be opposing the ruling party not getting into bed with them.

While Unions are needed especially in this country to protect workers from employers who in general place profits above human rights, the grim reality is that the unions we have are largely captured by the state and have a political agenda. Union corruption is well known, and I am personally aware of unions receiving 'brown envelopes" to side with employers in matters that do affect employees. In this country Unions unfortunately do far more harm than good, and we would be better off with government itself enforcing worker rights..

Never actually seen a union do anything useful in this country.
They seem to mostly be paid to piss their members off and blame it on the employers more than anything else.
