Vodacom paid R200 million for a trademark that cost R30,000

A MyBroadband analysis has revealed that Vodacom’s 2019 valuation of the IoT.nxt trademark at R200 million would have assumed exponential revenue growth that the company has not achieved.

For the more cynical who discounted the IoT.nxt mark as worthless, we also attempted to determine the basic cost the company incurred to register its trademarks worldwide.

So what is new with South African Telecoms? MTN impairs 49% of its Irancell losing 213c per share and a share price decline of 8.14% since the 3rd of August to today, R30 billion wiped out in market capitalisation.

Vodacom is still feeling the pain of the mishandled Makote matter, at least R500 million (through the income statement) and now R250 million due to a lack of a proper due diligence.

Just Justice Madlanga would say, third year level BCompt expertise.

Who is going to hold the management of these two companies accountable? Not their rubber stamping boards. We need shareholder activism urgently.
