‘Monstrosity’: R1bn V&A Waterfront hotel sparks backlash

In case serious - AI, our Purple Face is known for claiming to live on Table Mountain 😆

I was indeed serious. Quite impressive results, actually.

Pretty scary for graphic designers, etc. , I would imagine.

Looks like a boat built upside down, just needs to be flipped over into the harbour
Thank you! Exactly what I was thinking.

Just build a nose, flip it over into the water and sail it out.

These forum guys have f-all vision.

It doesn't even look appealing in the renders, I wonder what they are going for here, Brakpan high end with low maintenance face brick finishes??
I guess the one benefit of staying there is that you don't have to look at the horrible thing from the outside.

I visited Ceske Budejovice ("Budweis") in the Czech Republic in the early 2000s, and my god, was it grey and dull! The people's moods matched perfectly. Never saw a smile. Post-communism PTSD.
Please tell me you at least made it to the Budovar Brewery ! The most beautiful copper Tanks

Cape Town residents have expressed their disapproval of the development, particularly the design, of a new R1 billion hotel at the V&A Waterfront.

Late last year, hospitality conglomerate Marriott International and the V&A Waterfront announced plans to build an ultra-luxury R1 billion hotel, known as the Cape Town EDITION, the first of its kind on the African continent.

It forms part of the Quay 7 development, on the eastern side of the V&A Waterfront, and is part of the much larger expansion of the Waterfront and Granger Bay area.

It is not to be confused with the R1 billion refurbishment at the Table Bay Hotel, also at the Waterfront, which has recently reopened.

According to Time Out, the EDITION Hotel will feature

  • 142 hotel rooms and suites
  • 6 serviced private residences
  • A rooftop bar and pool
  • A luxury spa
  • Destination restaurants and dining
  • High-end event and lifestyle spaces
  • Extensive views towards the harbour, ocean and Table Mountain
It is expected to open in October 2026.

The 1960's called. They want their Brutalism back

This is London's Trellick Tower, one of a few Brutalist creations designed by architect Erno Goldfinger.

Ian Fleming hated Goldfinger's architecture so much that he chose to name his Bond villain after him. True story.

Perhaps a future Bond villain will be named after the Marriott chap.

Look at that open fire escape 😳

London has some butt ugly modern architecture.

Sure does. Brutalist stuff like the Barbican and then plenty of generic plain old boring stuff, particularly in east London.

Fortunately plenty of stunning stuff too!
