Eskom explains how smart meters will help it crack down on electricity theft

Eskom is rolling out smart meters to eliminate load reduction in South Africa, and people whose meters show any unusual usage could face hefty fines and disconnection.

The power utility has embarked on an ambitious project to replace traditional electricity meters with smart meters to deter electricity theft and illegal connections.

No mention of how this smart meter communicates? If a smart meter costs Cape Town R6k each, who is paying for these to be installed? What is achieved in the end after all this?

Zactly. Meanwhile all the people this hare-brained scheme is actually geared towards...

I was going to post earlier, but it seemed such an obvious point. Smart meters only work for consumers who have meters fitted...
I'm genuinely curious. What is it they are currently busy with in townships? There is talk of people being disconnected. Two boxes are fitted, one on the pole the other in the house.

Why invest so much time and effort and overhead in facilitating, managing and implementing all these new fancy load reduction and load shedding avoidance features? Isn’t the logical answer just to do maintenance and repair and replace aged and defective grid infrastructure?

"unusual usage"

I suspect they're talking about low usage which would point to either an exploiter of the African-Sunshine™ or someone using what they deem to be too little of their offering? How dare they.
I read an article about a crackdown of a house that had high usage. It was those scammers that rob people of their retirement money. Was quite interesting.

Umm, smart meters equals tenders. Fixing things equals actual work...

Came to point out, wondering what they deem unusual. Probably to have those who helped save and stabilise the grid now pay up.

They are busy with smart meter rollout, generally when a transformer explodes, it is not replaced until a full audit is done, the defaulters identified, acknowledgement of debt done and 60% of the defaulters have paid at least 60% of the fine.

Then the project starts with installation of smart meters and then the transformer is replaced. Same thing is happening now in my neck of woods, not a township but the people developed township tendencies of not paying, illegal connections that led to the transformer being burnt.
