Warning to people using Netflix and YouTube in South Africa

So these ne'er-do-wells are the ones messing up my algorithms?

While on this subject, a reminder to ALWAYS sign your accounts out of shared TVs..

On most of my hotel trips I don't need to sign into the Netflix/Disney/Prime apps on the TV's are someone's account is almost always still signed in.

Without having read the article, does it at any point explain how a user is made vulnerable?

Okay, wait, there is a tidbit:

“Victims unknowingly provide their cookies to cybercriminals when they visit suspicious websites or click on phishing links that download malicious software onto their computer.”

The problem is how these bad links are being circulated. Ignoring one which is unvetted ads on social media, and elsewhere. Bad actors do love targeting group chats. WhatApp (Meta as a whole), Telegram, etc, which include X chats are prime prowling grounds. From what I have seen, they do like to target emotions, current public sentiment, and the 7 deadly sins.

It is an old technique, but it is being automated now largely via agent use. Frequency went up. Same old attack vectors. Scam calls are on the rise.

Why this is important to mention, again, ignoring unvetted ads, it is a user/customer problem. It is incredibly hard to train users and customers, especially where they are emotionally targeted.

This,

Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi or “hotspots,” and avoid conducting financial or corporate transactions over these networks.

is true. Just to mention, I was at Cape Town International the other day, and I was surprised by how insecure a certain establishment's network (or Wi-Fi) was. I would have assumed that this is all being audited???
