Despite being financed with a bank loan, our entry-level solar power and battery system has started paying for itself in 2 years and 4 months.

That is much sooner than the typical break-even point for a small home solar and battery system compared with relying entirely on grid electricity.

pvc never paint again barge boards is a thing

If you insist to paint it
First coat has to be thinned a lot to pull into the wood

The end game should be getting off grid completely, and for new homeowners it makes sense to add the cost to the bond from the start and get off grid or close enough to make the last mile financially viable at a later stage.

Paying Eskom and municipalities is a become a nuisance. The more you use the more you pay. Ridiculous. They are chasing clients away. Gas geyser, solar and borehole (if viable)

Asbestos is poisonous/cancerous and last I checked not allowed to use for building.

You're probably referriung to fibre-reinforced cement, as asbestos is no longer available and has been banned for safety sake.

Pvc barge boards are definitely the way to go if you're building new. Replacing sections of the fibre-reinforced stuff after bits blow off during storms is incredibly painful with having to measure, cut and paint etc. - but not as painful or as expensive as redoing the whole house with the modern stuff either. The fibre stuff is also stupidly brittle and breaks if you look at it sideways.
