So I have noticed in the Cape Town CBD (near Gardens Centre, top floor apartment) my 5G signal can dip over weekends. Usually its for a few hours during "peak" or sometimes weekends during Rugby or similar. Rarely does it impact my streaming or gaming dramatically, but downloads are noticeably slower.
I can live with this, as its never longer than a day.
For the past 10 days though the issue persisted. There has been a lot of construction in the area, plus long weekends etc., I presumed related. Patience I have. Sometimes.
I decided I'd better just do some due diligence today though, and using the Rain.Co.Za "AI" support messaging system informed of a suspected tower issue.
LITERALLY 30s later I received a call on from a very well spoken American accented young lady who politely listened and went through the motions with me, and actually paid attention and UNDERSTOOD me when I referred to SNR & RSRP values dropping badly.
The conversation concluded with her informing me she'd be escalating to local technicians, and be being slightly shocked and pleasantly surprised at how impressive this service agents decorum and communication had been
Just over an hour later the signal stabilised to slightly above what I'm used to.
TAKE AWAY
RAIN often is maligned for performance issues by people who simply don't understand how cellular reception works, and somehow don't correlate 2 bars cellphone reception to bad 5G performance. People I encourage to join RAIN I first make sure they have wandered around their house with an MTN connected phone watching the Signal Strength meter on their phones Radio info page.
RAIN also is often moaned at about service, usually by people who do not get what they want, and usually directly related to the above. I'm here to tell you all I received unbelievably superb service compared to anything else I've experienced in RSA, ever.
Hell, I've reported vandalism to the Police where clearly the guy offering to paint it the day before had hurled black paint on a white wall. When asked what the problem was I said "somebody threw paint on our wall", the answer was "...and what, don't you like the colour?". I've fought with Takealot for 3 month to get money back they overcharged me after delivering the wrong, more expensive item, and then billing me for the thing I did not order. I've had ABSA bill me for a reposessed vehicle, that was paid off and sold but they apparently then took it from the new owner who defaulted and decided I was liable, my credit record still reflects this and I cannot remove it.
THE STORIES I COULD TELL YOU
Yet RAIN, this and previous experiences, incredible every single time.
I did not pay attention to the young American accented support representative's name unfortunately (called 13h22 12/08/26) , but wish I had so I could commend her directly to any manager type person monitoring these forums.
