Good news for people who need a new smart ID or passport in South Africa

Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber has said that by the end of the year, banks will offer first-time smart ID applications, passports, and home delivery of civics documents.

“Through our digital partnership with the banking sector, we are undertaking a major expansion of access to Home Affairs services,” Schreiber said on Wednesday.
 
So digital but not quite digital.

“A predominantly digital solution is envisaged to launch by the end of 2026 to enable customers to order their IDs online,” Absa stated.

However, it said that capturing biometric data remained a challenge and that people would have to visit a physical branch to do so for the foreseeable future.

It sounds great on paper, but for anyone living outside the major hubs—like us down on the lower South Coast where the nearest participating branch is all the way in Durban—it doesn't do much for accessibility. Also, just a note for fellow pensioners: while upgrading from the old green book for the very first time is free, remember that replacing a lost or damaged Smart ID will still cost you the standard fee, plus whatever extra service charge the bank adds on. Good initiative for the cities, but regional areas still get left behind.
 
Well, it's not as is government is competent enough to even get Home Affairs system working properly so as usual the private sector has to step in and do what government clearly can't. And we are supposed to trust these clowns with Smart ID and Digital ID records.

Not even the faintest bit of embarrassment from these idiots about the private sector having to step in.

This was the only way to stop the fraudulent free-for-all their employees engaged in to destroy a very basic service. A service even the worst fleapits on the planet manage to get right.
