My car is 21 years old (I've owned it for 16 years of those). Will never sell it so it only goes if written-off. I haven't paid vehicle instalments since 2012. It's a 2 seater coupe which still holds up with looks and power. The only non-servicing expenses I'd had in that time was a clutch replacement and power steering motor replacement.

It's a 350z so still popular overseas. Had to import the powersteering motor. When the clutch was replaced there was stock here in SA though (think it was in 2019 or so).
 
I have a 24 year old BMW E46 330d, still going strong. Bought it new for R300k in early 2002.

But over the last year I spent R35k on it, some of it preventative maintenance (gearbox service, etc). Includes new alternator.

A couple of years ago I installed an Android display radio, which transformed the car. It is fully integrated via Canbus, so the car now has reverse camera, bluetooth, displays errors, internet, etc. It fits in the dash perfectly, looks OEM, even comes up with BMW logo.

This car always had a good trip computer, doubt if the new cars are any better.

So the car still looks great, and the leather seats are still perfect.

Can't think of a reason to sell it. A new 320d costs over R1m, and I can't afford that.

Either the cost to repair something that is reaching end of life is prohibitively expensive, or I write the old one off are the two primary reasons.

This time around it might just be because I want a new car though since there are some nice new bakkies in the pipeline that are tempting.

So far 42% of people definitely going to a mechanic - hence why we have mechanics.
 
We have a tame mechanic who is really good at diagnosing and fixing car problems

Compare this with BMW agents who are disinterested and can only swap parts. The worst experience with them was fixing an oil leak. They had 4 attempts to sort it out and tried to charge R14000 for their work.

In the end, my local mechanic traced the leak to a rubber plug at the back of the rocker box. A replacement cost R105 and took 10 mins to fix

I told BMW what had occurred and they disputed the finding and got their lawyers onto me. A couple of letters to BMW-SA sorted this out

How did you get your car back from BMW without paying the R14k?

Taking a car out of warranty directly to the dealer is very very expensive.

Their labour is overpriced even tho the parts and oil costs next to nothing.
 
honestly when something major goes bang like the engine or the chassis rusts out here in the coast.
otherwise if you pick asian you can drive forever and still find parts for when it goes bang.

would be interesting to see in a few years when more EV's are on the roads,
as its basically a cellphone with wheels will people upgrade them constantly?
