TL;DR Athletics South Africa and KZN Athletics are corrupt as hell, they do f*** all yet demand 10% of all race entries to get paid over to them.

People who run sports bodies tend to be an inept and egotistical lot. Being competent at sport does not equate to being competent at administration and planning, in fact I have often seen the opposite to be true. Almost all sports people are trained to a certain degree of blind self confidence to give them a winning edge. Mix all that up together and you get the glorious incompetence of just about any sporting admin body.

Swimming SA
SA rugby
SA cricket
ICC
Olympic body
FIFA

The list is endless. I really believe sports bodies should stop recruiting from ex players. Just hire for competence in admin skills.

Having had to deal with them as the secretary of a running club I can confirm. Useless bunch of malakes who get in the way of athletics more than they enable athletics

100%. I had the misfortune of having to go to the annual KZN athletics AGM this year as one of the represntatives of our club, such a waste of time -full of puffed up, self important people who seem to be in it more for themselves than for the sport itself.
 
The Comrades has become an international success story exactly because it's not run by the inept cadre deployed! Clearly though, you won't be allowed to remain successful if you don't pay the required bribe!
 
Hmmm...I wonder how this will affect qualification for Comrades if they're giving ASA the finger. Will "unofficial" runs now count towards qualification?
Till now qualifiers all had to be held under the auspices of ASA or World Athletics

They will have to simply handle that admin now - the individual marathon organizers anyways submit to ASA, now they can simply send it to the CMA - this is what I understand to be the "biggest" challenge, which I am sure can easily be solved

The rules should in theory still stay the same in terms of which races are official etc.

Is it me or is ASA trying to make it sound like they are distancing themselves first - like when a chick breaks up with you and then you quickly say "yeah, I was thinking the same thing, it's not working between us"
 
This position follows the failure of the event organisers (Comrades Marathon Association) to recognise and comply with the governance and regulatory framework governing athletics. Despite extensive engagements undertaken in good faith by Athletics South Africa and its member federation, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA), the organisers have not satisfied the requirements necessary for sanctioning under the constitution, rules and regulations of KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, Athletics South Africa and World Athletics.

The World Athletics Constitution provides in Article 7.3 that: “There shall only be one Member Federation from any one Country or Territory.” ASA is the recognised World Athletics Member Federation for South Africa.

Athletics South Africa fully supports KwaZulu-Natal Athletics in the execution of its constitutional and regulatory responsibilities as the duly recognised provincial member federation responsible for the administration and governance of athletics within KwaZulu-Natal.


As the national governing body for athletics in South Africa, Athletics South Africa has a responsibility to ensure that all athletics and road running events are conducted within a consistent governance framework, and in compliance with the applicable rules, regulations and standards. These requirements apply equally to all event organisers and cannot be selectively applied or disregarded.

The portfolio committee Chairperson, Mr Joe McGluwa, said ASA is on the verge of collapse with no financial controls, an inability to prioritise critical issues and infighting among board members. “There is no way the entity could run an effective athletics programme with the level of brokenness that is manifest in this board. We are going to be wondering when we fail to bring home medals at international events, when we are managing chaos instead of running successful athletics programmes,” he said.

“The committee is shocked that the Ministry would leave the federation on autopilot for as long as it has. We have called them four times to Parliament, raising the same issues they were unable to account on today. When affiliates and provinces are unable to honour winning prizes for athletes, not once, not twice, that is a serious cause for concern,” Mr McGluwa said.

The committee asked questions about the suspension of the ASA President, Mr James Moloi, and the clumsy manner with which his disciplinary process is being handled. Committee members also questioned as to why athletes in Mpumalanga and participants in the Soweto Marathon did not receive their prize money. McGluwa said the committee will not relent on this matter of the outstanding winners’ payments.

The committee also voiced disappointment with Minister Gayton Mckenzie who did not attend the meeting, despite having previously committed to resolve ASA governance and administrative challenges and had promised a report for today’s follow-up meeting.
