Some people even save it in their spare bedrooms, on their phala phala game farm.

64% of South Africans save cash under a mattress

64% of working South Africans keep cash saved at home rather than inside the bank, according to a newly released report from Old Mutual.
The article doesn’t say they exclusively keep cash saved at home.

I find the number low actually, one would think almost 100% of people keep an emergency stash of cash at home. Also, for everyday use, it’s not as if we earn interest on our transactional accounts in SA, so what difference does it make if it’s in the bank or in a shoebox

A lot of people keep cash at home; the only reason this would ever be an issue is lost income for government and banks as far as I can see. Well becoming a victim of crime is also high up there, but the move towards cashless is more about control and taxation more than anything else if we are perfectly honest.
