R6,000 fine for drivers who ignore a 15-year-old warning in South Africa

It's always surprised me that the City of Cape Town had 32000 unclaimed phones during their spate of confiscating them, and also that nobody mounted a legal challenge to this. (There was a rumor that they eventually stopped it because they were receiving a high level of claims for damaged and missing phones.)

Not condoning using a phone while driving at all, but confiscating your personal communications and data device, which for many people is their lifeline to banking, work, family, etc goes way beyond a monetary fine and is wildly disproportionate to the offense.

I agree. They should impound the transgressors cars as well.

"Insurers like Discovery now use tools to track smartphone usage while the car is in motion, allowing them to see whether the device was unlocked and in use at the time of impact, making it far easier for the company to link the phone as a contributing factor."

Apps and dongles in the car. Thanks, I'll skip, but likely the heavy phone users have all the apps anyways. Same as don't buy alcohol with your <related bank> card: naughty naughty -1000 points for you.

The amount of times I have near been swatted by a driver on their phone though...

They might need to modify that idea, phones are now connected to that big screen in the car. Sure they might not be unlocked but they are being used

Most of those big screens severely limit what you can do with the phone when connected.

But it's still a massive distraction, I need to adjust air flow, big screen, slide thing and and.
