Amazon Leo falling further behind Starlink by the day

Oh well, to hell with satellite Internet then. It's just a stupid gimmick. Not like I'm planning to move to an area without fibre or 5G coverage anytime soon.

This isnt for everybody (especially if you are in a fiber covered area) but for remote locations and planes it is wonderful. Having fast internet on planes would be awesome (and productive). And of course digital agriculture. And disaster response. The direct to cell stuff will mean you will never be in a dead spot in case of emergency (I was once stuck on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere without cellphone reception. Not a fun experience). Remote work now can really mean remote work.

Anything but a gimmick.

But yea - the people promoting it as some kind of fiber competitor need to have their heads examined.
 
It will take a lot longer than 2-3 years to be where Starlink is today.

SpaceX has a launch of about 20 satellites almost every week.
They de-orbit about 50 a month, so those are mostly replacements. 657 in 2025 according to ChatGPT.
 
SpaceX is de-orbiting more in a month than Amazon can launch for the rest of the year:giggle:
I see a time where the majority of Amazon Leo sats are all launched by Spacex. :laugh:

I mean spacex did complete the OneWeb constellation when the Russians decided to invade Ukraine.

Maybe spacex will switch to daily launch.

Or Amazon becomes one of the first customers of Starship.
 
SpaceX is phasing out the Falcon 9 launch vehicle. Customers are already claiming that they cannot get new bookings for space on launches.
The new vehicle now is the Starship and its mission is different. Amazon Leo is not going to get much help from SpaceX to get its satellites in the sky.
There are other options but those are not enough for Amazon to be viable in the short to medium term. Forget about Amazon Leo launching its service in South Africa next year or maybe even the year afterwards.

Amazon’s only option is to secure space on more flights from its third-party launch partners. Aside from Arianespace, it also relies on United Launch Alliance (ULA) and SpaceX for its deployments.

So Musk wins regardless of how successful Leo is.

“Elon thinks we can do the job with cheaper and simpler satellites, sooner,” a source told Reuters at the time of Badyal’s dismissal. Earlier in 2018, SpaceX launched a pair of prototype cube-shaped Internet satellites for demonstrations in orbit. Then, less than a year after firing Badyal, Musk’s company launched the first full stack of Starlink satellites, debuting the now-standard flat-panel design.

In a post Friday on LinkedIn, Badyal wrote that the Kuiper satellites have had “an entirely nominal start” to their mission. “We’re just over 72 hours into our first full-scale Kuiper mission, and the adrenaline is still high.”

The Starlink and Kuiper constellations use laser inter-satellite links to relay Internet signals from node-to-node across their networks. Starlink broadcasts consumer broadband in Ku-band frequencies, while Kuiper will use Ka-band.

Ultimately, SpaceX’s simplified Starlink deployment architecture has fewer parts and eliminates the need for a carrier structure. This allows SpaceX to devote a higher share of the rocket’s mass and volume capacity to the Starlink satellites themselves, replacing dead weight with revenue-earning capability. The dispenser architecture used by Amazon is a more conventional design and gives satellite engineers more flexibility in designing their spacecraft. It also allows satellites to spread out faster in orbit.

Others involved in the broadband megaconstellation rush have copied SpaceX’s architecture.

China’s Qianfan, or Thousand Sails, satellites have a “standardized and modular” flat-panel design that “meets the needs of stacking multiple satellites with one rocket,” according to the company managing the constellation. While Chinese officials haven’t released any photos of the satellites, which could eventually number more than 14,000, this sounds a lot like the design of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites.

What this could mean is that Amazon will have to use SpaceX launches more to reach the same level of coverage that Starlink has.

All the other satelite operators manage to operate in South Africa.

Some form of local ownership laws are not unique to South Africa. In fact I suspect it will be more difficult for a South African company to get a license for broadband satelite in the US than for a US company to get one here. Having to work with a local partner is pretty common around the world.

If Musk didn't want to score political points with his base in the US, Starlink would have been available here.
