doing a cambelt service on the Getz thats on 229K
cambelt kit including water pump is 1K (Korean spares)
labour another 850

you just cant beat the Asians, who probably copied the Getz from a Golf or something
and made it better.

The R3k was including labour of taking the front bumper off.

I'm sure learning lots about German cars on how they approach simple maintenance, stupidly tight and over complicated for what reason?

but as long as you can use your left hand for the indicators :ROFL:

Try fit a 3.0l in your engine bay and see if you can do timing chain without removing engine.

My dad loved his CLX and serviced it himself. He even had it completely stripped down and resprayed. It was immaculate when he sold it. At a point we would go down to KZN twice a year, so lots of long distance trips and never any issues.

It met a sad fate, though. He sold it to someone from work and the guy pulled it through his arse before writing it off in an accident.
 
Bought my Toyota Corolla Quest new in 2015, no issues yet, just normal services, batteries and tires. Want to upgrade, but cannot justify it.
 
My fathers Audi A5 (2010) V8 Petrol - which we have religiously maintained.

HP and LP Fuel Pumps
Coil Packs
De-catted
Radiator Fan Controller
Cam Seals
Power Steering Pipes
Boil bottle and associated piping
Radiator

And on Monday a coolant pipe burst whilst driving on the highway and the engine got a bit warm, luckily it was then parked nearby overnight and cooled slowly so it seems no damage has occurred to the engine.

Just been quoted R54k to replace all (32) coolant pipes in that engine......

I've said a long time ago get rid of the thing, but I suspect he'd sooner "drive it into the ground" than actually spend the money he's spending on repairs towards a newer, simpler MORE RELIABLE vehicle.

I always loved the big snow icon or the economy small snow icon for the aircon.

But with the amount of money spent in the past year (R290k) he could have easily sold the car (R180k) + R290k and got something newer and more reliable

I've given up trying to understand the rationality behind his decisions.

Yeah, if I need HP fuel pump then I sell and get a getz.

Yep. There is a car channel I watch on YT and it is insane how you have to strip the engine down to replace things, even for simple stuff. And the mechanics constantly b*tch about it and specifically the German cars, sarcastically commenting on German engineering. Sure, they may be reliable, but they are not easy to work on, extremely complicated, expensive to maintain and very little is accessible. A lot of the mechanics are Eastern European and they often comment that growing up in Estonia or Poland you wanted to drive a German car because they were reliable, readily available and easy to maintain. Not so much anymore.

A great example is the 3l VW/Audi TDI. Absolute beast of an engine, but you don't want to be the owner when it needs a major service or repairs.

This ^

Specifically the bigger engines with twin turbos etc and no space to work. Often minor issues require the engine to be removed from the car to be fixed
