Leroy Saunders: South African Fitness Coach Dies at 41 After Collapsing During a Sports Event

You can do all the stuff a be healthier without being part of discovery...
of course its possible, but I'm genuinely curious,
is any of the recommendations and directives based in any facts?

and if so, why didn't it save this guy from having a heart attack and dying at age 41.
I mean he did everything right, yet the grim reaper still came for him
exactly as it will for somebody sitting on the couch eating cheeseburgers.

so genetics plays a bigger role than we know ?
No. Conventional wisdom at this point. (What we think we know) is that it is all genetics. And if you have a history of heart problems in your family you are likely to inherent it. Now with some of these sports people their family didn't quite push themselves so far as to discover their genetic limit.

Most ideas that you can overcome your genetics or adapt your lifestyle to not activate genetic "problems" are still fringe.

Generally being healthier is better for your specific genetics. Maybe if your dad died at 60 from heart failure you can make it to 70 if you aren't a fat slob. That doesn't mean you'll beat some other person with better genetics that will make it to 80 without even trying.

This guy was not just average joe healthy.

He was competing in a very strenuous competition that push people to their limits

What he was doing is not comparable to you not eating McDonald's and getting your 10k steps in.

It depends which ones you are talking about... because you've eluded to a wide range of things.
- better sleep is better health, better cognitive performance and more, proven over and over
- better weight management lowers risk factors of many things
- being less sedentary has also been proven

Most of these things (loosely speaking are well published by organisations such as WHO etc).

Yep. Going to gym, hitting some weights, hitting some cardio is not nearly in the same league as bouncing your heart off of the limiter doing hyrox after international travel.

In the same way that if you drive your car at an average pace and there's a manufacturing defect it might not grenade the engine but might just degrade performance... but if you take that same car to the race track and red-line it continuously because you're trying to get your laptimes down there's a much more significant chance of it going "knock knock! who's there? piston number 3".

"Inherent it"? :)

Maybe he was just more inbred? :)

fair point, but there is so much misinformation and lies and stories its hard to know,
I always believed people like this athlete who push themselves to the limit, don't die young from heart attacks,
as the Human body was designed to run at max Speed all day running from sabre tooth tigers and hunting,

even today there are some tribes who are un-contacted who live extreamly active lives
no modern medicine, eating fruits and berries all day, drinking stagnant water, living just like the modern world does not exist,
and somehow living to 100 with Zero outside or modern help.

how is this possible? where is the problem?

is it the pollution and environment we live in, where our gut/brains is full of microplastic,
where our brains contain traces of plastics that leech into our bloodstreams.

is it the marketing we constantly fed, do X amount for Y time, get below A weight for 12 months

what is the actual truth? as things like an ultra marathon athlete dying from a heart attack just shouldn't happen

or like I always suspect its all a scam and a lie,
people can live very long lives, smoking all day, eating cheeseburgers, considering the walk from the fridge to the couch a marathon, and sitting desk bound entirely.

and modern medicine and science makes so much profit from selling people wellness and supplements and things they dont need, that again they peddle lies constantly to make us believe.

No. People aren't designed to run at full speed all day. We are pretty bad and slow at that. Nobody is out sprinting sabre tooth tigers. We have better endurance long distance capabilities than a lot of other animals. At about 30% effort.

If you are fit and practice enough you can do a ultra marathon and jog 100km at a easy pace of 10 - 12km/h.

Humans invented sharp pointy sticks so that we don't have to run away from wild animals.

It's far more complex than you are mentioning in your comments here.

Sure there ARE people who smoke and drink and live long.. but they are the exceptions.

What's the mortality rate like of those tribes? Are they thousands of people? Or a few hundred? Do they have many children and most die off? Their record keeping is "best guess estimates" and often over exaggerated and even count the same person twice because they have the same name as their father etc.

They DO however not suffer from chronic stress like much of the "modern world", eat healthier and live more active lives. But the data saying how much longer they live or how much healthier they are is effectively "incomplete"

Do you realise that bringing that into the discussion is actually a counter point to your own first point?

We (as a species, generally speaking) have kept weaker genetics alive through intervention which is weakening the species as a whole. I'm thankful for that because my prematurely born son would have been put out in a field to die "back in the day".

of course its a many shades of grey world out there,
hence an ultra fit and healthy individual dying really young, completely against the common knowledge where stuff like this should not happen.

so again, is it genetics that played a role or is it environment, is it stress, is it plastic and toxin pollution finally building up to extreme levels.

or is it something nefarious like Steroids and banned substances.

The only way there will be a definitive answer is if you get hold of an autopsy result.

But again, you can't equate someone doing hyrox at international levels with "fit and healthy extends life".

Any genetic issue or any damage is amplified whenever you run anything at close to max performance often - this is true for humans/animals/machinery.

This doesn't automatically throw away "common knowledge" that being healthier is better and leads to better health outcomes.
